If we want to keep our body healthy, we have to take care of our stomach first, because if the stomach is not working properly, then the entire body system deteriorates. Today, about 25% of people suffer from constipation.  

It would not be wrong to say that constipation is the root cause of all diseases. The biggest reason for this is our busy life and an unhealthy diet.

Constipation 

 Constipation occurs in 10-15% of adults. It is more common in women. Elderly people have reduced mobility due to medical conditions, medications, poor eating habits, and in some cases are unable to sit on the toilet. The patient needs to determine what is meant by constipation. 

 Patients may define constipation in constipation as less than three abnormal stools per week, hard stools, excessive stress, or a feeling of incomplete evacuation. The typical colonial tract time is about 35 hours, which is more than an hour.  Hours are significantly more unusual than hours.

Physical examination should include digital rectal examination with assessment for anatomic abnormalities such as anal stricture, rectal prolapse, or perineal descent during straining.

Further diagnostic tests should be performed in patients with any of the following age 50 years or older, severe constipation, signs of allergic disorders, alarming symptoms (hematochezia, weight loss, positive FOBT or FIT) or a family history of colonel cancer or inflammatory bowel disease.

  • Difficulty in passing the stool    
  • Hard stool  
  • If one passes stools less than three times a week  
  • Feeling the rectum has not emptied fully after passing stool 
Causes of constipation:

    
  •  Drinking less water (dehydration)
  • Age factor  
  • Less fibre food 
  • Excessive use of chilli spices
  • During pregnancy
  • Surgery
  • Medication (Taking medicine for any other disease) 
  • Eating more meat 
  • Sitting more (no physical activity )
  • Depression  
  • Nervous disorder  
  • Diabetes  
  • Thyroid disorder 
  • Processed food

Lifestyle modification 

People who suffer from constipation should do light exercise in the morning and evening. Regular exercise is associated with a decreased risk of constipation. Adverse psychological issues should be identified.

Patients should be instructed on normal defecator function and optimal toileting habits, including regular timing, proper positioning and abdominal pressure.


Changes in dietary habits 

Adequate dietary fluid and fibre intake should be emphasized. A trial of fibre supplements is recommended.

Constipation patients should always drink lukewarm water. Food should not be eaten in a hurry, chew well and eat. Such people should eat more papaya, guava, carrot, watermelon, tomato and turnip.

Treatment of constipation 


Laxatives:  Laxatives may be on an intermittent or chronic basis for constipation that doesn't respond to dietary and lifestyle changes. There is no evidence that long-term use of these agents is harmful.


Osmotic laxatives:  Osmotic agents increase secretion of water into the intestinal lumen, thereby softening stools and promoting defecation. Magnesium hydroxide, nondigestible carbohydrates and polythene glycol are all efficacious and safe for treating acute and chronic constipation 


Stimulants:  Stimulants stimulate the fluid secretion and clonic contraction, cause in a bowel movement within 6 - 12 hours. Oral stimulates are usually administered once daily at bedtime. Common preparations include bisacodyl, senna, and cascara.


Chloride secretary agents: Lubiprostone and linaclotide stimulate intestinal chloride secretion through activation of chloride channels or guanylcyclas C, respectively, resulting in increase intranasal fluid and sped up colonic transit.


Never ignore constipation, because if constipation persists, it can also cause acidity. If constipation persists after all precautions, be sure to consult a doctor.
